Make your own bunting and garlands
Garlands are a brilliant eye-catcher at any party. We’ll show you how you can easily make your own
Pennants and bunting are lovely accessories that instantly give rather dreary rooms a much friendlier, livelier look. It doesn’t matter whether you hang them on doors, windows or walls – lovingly designed garlands look great anywhere, and they’re incredibly versatile. The possibilities range from pretty room decorations for a child’s birthday party, to a cheerful welcome message to mark the birth of a baby, right through to an elegant eye-catcher at a wedding. And there’s absolutely no need to settle for the garlands available in shops. Get creative and design garlands exactly as you’d like – it’s child’s play with Secabo’s cutting plotters.
Flatbed cutting plotters from Secabo

Cutting plotters are a great help to both hobbyists and design professionals in a wide range of applications, and are also a fantastic tool for creating your own bunting and garlands, allowing you to cut out even the most intricate patterns with precision. In the YOW! online shop, you’ll find not only the Secabo SC30 sheet-fed cutting plotter – which is particularly well-suited to producing contour-cut stickers and labels – but also a range of flatbed cutting plotters. Secabo’s new FC series consists of a compact desktop model, the FC50, and a significantly larger floor-standing model, the FC100. With a working area slightly larger than A3, the FC50 already covers almost all areas of application for hobbyists and is also ideal for designing garlands.
Unlike conventional roll-fed plotters, flatbed cutting plotters offer the key advantage of being able to process not only single-layer media such as paper and card, but also very thick and inflexible materials. The felt mat included in the scope of delivery ensures smooth operation even when making full cuts, without damaging the vacuum table. Furthermore, the machine is equipped with a second tool head, which includes a scoring tool for creating fold marks. This makes the Secabo flatbed cutting plotters ideal for designing personalised folding greeting cards or entire packaging boxes, as the plotting process not only cuts out contours but also draws lines where the objects will later need to be folded. As with many other cutting plotters in the YOW! online shop, when you purchase the FC50 or FC100, you automatically receive the DrawCutPro cutting software for Windows. This provides you with optimal support right from the layout design stage of your garlands.
How to make your own garlands – here’s how
Materials and equipment
- Secabo TC50 flatbed cutting plotter or equivalent device
- DrawCutPro cutting software or similar
- White A3 drawing paper (or card, if preferred)
- Needle, thread, scissors
Step 1: Design the layout
Use DrawCutPro to design a custom layout for your pennant bunting. The software allows you to insert the Lapos Q cutting marks and the barcode – which will later be read by the plotter – into your layout. Once you are happy with the result, you can print it out. With the FC50 flatbed cutting plotter, this is possible for sheet sizes up to DIN A3.
Step 2: Plotting
Place your material on the vacuum table, switch on the vacuum pump and ensure that the laser spot comes to rest immediately before the first cutting line. If necessary, move the machine head to the appropriate position. Then all you need to do is activate the laser and confirm the zero point. As soon as the barcode has been recognised, the graphic will appear in DrawCutPro and the cutting process will start automatically. Once the process is complete, you can carefully peel the pennant away from the sheet of paper. Repeat this process until all the pennants have been cut out.
Step 3: Tie the pennants together
Arrange the pennants in the correct order and thread them onto a thin string. This is best done using a sewing needle. Your personalised bunting is now ready – all you need to do is hang it up in the right place. A great eye-catcher for any occasion.”
