Printing on textiles yourself: using inkjet flex film

Design T-shirts, trousers and more to suit your own taste with personalised and unique designs. InkJet flex film makes it possible!

A plain white T-shirt may well serve its purpose, but it can quickly look boring, and the printed T-shirts you find in shops often don’t live up to your expectations. So why not just get creative yourself? With a personalised and unique design that perfectly matches your vision, your clothes will become real eye-catchers. To ensure this project is a real success, high-quality materials are essential. Not least, the film you use to transfer the design onto your garment plays a crucial role. With Selectsign InkJet Flex film, textile transfer becomes child’s play and can be carried out quite easily using a standard inkjet printer and a heat press. We’ll show you how it’s done!

To design textiles exactly as you envisage, we recommend using special flex films. These feature a hot-melt adhesive layer and a backing, which makes processing in a cutting plotter and transfer press particularly straightforward. However, beginners in particular, who do not have professional-grade equipment, quickly reach their limits, as they may wonder how on earth to transfer the desired design onto the item in question. This is where the Selectsign InkJet flex film comes into its own, as this white, thermally transferable polyurethane film in A4 format can be printed on using any standard inkjet printer. Furthermore, it is suitable for transfer onto almost all textiles available on the market and is even washable at temperatures of up to 90°C,

Here’s how!

Step 1: The pressure

The Selectsign InkJet Flex film can generally be used with any standard inkjet printer. Once you have chosen a design, you can simply print it out using your inkjet printer. Please ensure that you print on the matt front side of the film and that the design is printed the right way round.

Step 2: Cut the film to size

Cutting plotters enable you to cut your print to size quickly and precisely. All our plotter models come with specialised software that guarantees accurate cutting, even for small objects. After cutting, remove the film from the plotter and peel the print design off the backing. If you do not have a cutting plotter, you can also cut out the design by hand. In any case, we recommend carrying out a test cut first before attempting to cut out your chosen design.

Step 3: Pressing

A wide variety of designs can be transferred quickly and easily onto garments using a heat transfer press. Place the printed side of the film face-up on the fabric, cover it with our PTFE protective film (or, if necessary, a piece of baking paper) and press the film onto the fabric at approx. 145°C for 20 seconds using medium pressure.
