Secabo enters the world of motorsport
As part of an international design competition, SECABO is supporting BRS Motorsport by providing a plotter for the professional wrapping of its racing car.
What links Secabo and motorsport?
As part of an international design competition, enthusiastic students from Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, operating as BRS Motorsport, are building an electric racing car that utilises the very latest technologies and is developed in accordance with recognised engineering methods. As well as high-performance technical components, a successful racing car naturally also requires professional wrapping and sponsors’ logos. And that’s where we at YOW! come in. Read the article and see the students’ impressions here:

“In our quest for the best possible results, we are reluctant to limit ourselves and like to compare different solutions. For this reason, we wanted to create the film cuts ourselves – just as we do with other car components – and apply the graphics to our car ourselves. However, we are of course no experts in the field of advertising technology, which is why we needed expert advice and high-quality products. We also wanted to work with a company that, just like us, develops its own products. This is how our partnership with Secabo came about.”

In the field of film application, there is a wide range of cutting plotters and media available for a vast variety of applications. After we had outlined our plans, the YOW! online shop was the first to advise us in detail on the various requirements in our sector when selecting the right products, informed us about potential difficulties and provided us with valuable tips. We therefore opted forthe Secabo S60 II cutting plotter and UV-resistant films designed for demanding outdoor conditions. Thanks to the comprehensive and very helpful video tutorials and the user manual, we were able to get to grips with the equipment quickly. As a result, after just a few test plots, we had adjusted the contact pressure and cutting depth very effectively.

As we develop many of the components in the racing car ourselves, we are used to the fact that unforeseen faults often arise when using prototypes and that teething problems need to be ironed out. That is why we are very well placed to assess how much work goes into a production-ready product. The S60 II cutting plotter is very well-developed, and when using it, you can tell that a great deal of time has been invested in its development and that a wealth of experience has gone into the machine. This meant we were able to get to grips with it in no time at all and work very productively and creatively. Right from the start, we were able to focus on the essentials and weren’t held up by workarounds or other difficulties when bringing our ideas to life.

We are not only satisfied with the recommended plotter; we were actually very impressed by some of its technical solutions and functions. For example, the compensation for drag knife offset and the adjustment options available in this regard. This enables us to cut even very fine contours with precision. This, in turn, is only possible with well-controlled cutting drives and repeatable mechanics, which is an indication of the product’s high quality.

It is actually rather difficult to find any really serious points of criticism. If we were to nit-pick, it is worth mentioning that the arrow keys on the plotter’s control interface work very well for setting the starting position, but not quite as well for adjusting the contact pressure, which is shown on the display. The display responds with a slight delay when the buttons are pressed; however, the cutting pressure for the cutting head does not need to be adjusted very often and can also be set via the PC software. What is a little more noticeable is that, after a test run, the cutting head does not return to the starting point set on the control panel, but only to the software’s initial starting point.

However, the criticism mentioned relates to additional features which, on the whole, do make the work considerably easier. Setting the starting point via the user interface, the area test and the laser for aligning the film substantially boost productivity and efficiency, but it’s also fun to work with. And I would have no hesitation in recommending a Secabo cutting plotter to any potential buyer.”
